Sarah Hyde-Williams
Sarah Hyde-Williams brings over 23 years of experience in senior living and dementia care. As an Elder Care Consultant and Dementia Educator, she is passionate about helping deliver care that is deeply compassionate and person-centered. Her credentials include Certified Assisted Living Manager, Certified Dementia Practitioner, Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Trainer, Certified Dementia Care Manager, Certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional, PAC Certified Independent Trainer & Coach. Sarah’s work is rooted in dignity, connection and the belief that every person living with dementia deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.

Karen Straw, MA CCC-SLP
Speech Language Pathologist and Certified Dementia Educator
Karen is a seasoned professional with over 15 years of experience as a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP). She is a Certified Dementia Practitioner®, and Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Trainer™ with the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP). Karen is also a Certified Independent Coach, Consultant, Trainer and Champion Teacher with Positive Approach to Care® (PAC™), a renowned organization specializing in dementia care training. She is dedicated to promoting positive and compassionate approaches to dementia care.

Pre-Conference Offering
The Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Course provides participants with a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of Alzheimer’s dementia. Through this course, you’ll not only gain knowledge but also practical caregiving skills. You’ll learn effective person centered communication techniques, and problem-solving strategies, that are vital for providing exceptional care to individuals with dementia.
Topics will include: Person centered care, Compassionate Communication, Dementia Friendly Environments, Common Misconceptions between Depression and Dementia, Behavioral Expressions, Wandering and Fall Prevention, ADLs, Sexuality, Intimacy and Dementia, Activities, Abuse Neglect and Exploitation, Partners in Care, Diversity, Spirituality, Religion and End of Life Care
All participants will receive a Student Reference Manual at the event
Certification: This is a prerequisite course for Certified Dementia Practitioner® credential application. Upon completion of this course, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for the credential of Certified Dementia Practitioner® credential, reinforcing your expertise in dementia care. This curriculum is approved by the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners™.

Day 1: Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care Skills® and GEMS®
Immerse yourself in an interactive learning experience where you’ll not only understand the theory behind Positive Approach to Care® and GEMS®, but actively practice these skills through role play and group discussions.
- Experience dementia through simulation exercises that help you understand brain changes firsthand
- Practice real-time interactions with partners as you learn the Positive Physical Approach™
- Role play different scenarios to master visual, verbal, and touch cues
- Engage in small group discussions to problem-solve challenging situations
- Receive immediate feedback as you practice observation and assessment skills
Throughout this hands-on Masterclass, you will:
- Observe and practice recognizing different GEMS® States through video analysis and role play exercises
- Master connection techniques by practicing with workshop partners before attempting care tasks
- Try different approaches and discuss what works (and doesn’t work) in various scenarios
- Share experiences and learn from fellow participants’ successes and challenges
- Develop personalized strategies you can immediately apply in your care setting

Day 2: Montessori Dementia Care
This certification course, often referred to as Certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional (CMDCP), teaches how to integrate Montessori principles into caregiving practices for individuals with dementia. The ICCDP (International Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners) is the organization that offers these certifications.
Research supports the efficacy of the Montessori approach in dementia care. Studies have demonstrated various benefits, including:
- Increased engagement and participation in activities.
- Reduced behavioral issues and agitation.
- Improved mood and overall well-being.
- Preservation of cognitive and functional abilities for longer periods.
The Montessori Method presents a valuable approach to dementia care, emphasizing respect, independence, and sensory engagement. By focusing on the individual strengths and needs of those with Alzheimer’s and dementia, this method can enhance quality of life and cognitive function.

Day 3: Skills Stations Application and Demonstration
Put your learning into action during this interactive half-day session designed to bridge theory and real-world practice. Through guided exercises, case study discussions, and hands-on activities, you’ll integrate the Positive Approach to Care and Montessori methodologies from Days 1 and 2 into practical strategies you can implement immediately. Work alongside fellow care professionals to troubleshoot challenging scenarios, refine your skills, and build confidence in your ability to deliver person-centered dementia care. Leave the conference not just inspired, but equipped with concrete tools and the practice experience to make meaningful changes in your care setting.
